One of the most encouraging things about this project was the comments of attitudes of the locals that would pass by while we worked. We had parents and grandparents from the neighborhood remarking on how much better the garden looked and that they were so excited for the kids to grow their own food. This experience showed me just how connected the children are within the community, and it ultimately proved the precepts of this Standard. The children don’t learn and play in isolation; they are a part of the community, and this project reinforced this value by providing a space where the young students can be outside and connect with their community in a way they can’t do as easily within the classroom. |
This experience helped me better understand the impact of community in education and shows my appreciation for the ideals presented in TRB Standard 4. In particular, this event aligns well with the revised BC curriculum focus on social and personal responsibility. While refereeing, I saw students practicing their lessons in social responsibility by being courteous and helpful with one another. Students participating in this event recognized that they are part of something greater and that they owe the other members of the community respect and appreciation, and I saw nothing but exemplary behavior in this regard. Likewise, students are expected to employ acts of personal awareness and responsibility throughout the event, like managing personal expectations for success and failure or simply keeping up with the hectic schedule and making it to the correct match at the correct time.
